EAST RUTHERFORD Cody Latimer Color Rush Jersey , N.J. (AP) —Gettleman and coach Pat Shurmur, the New York Giants were thinking some pieces in free agency might help them get back to the playoffs for only the second time since 2011.Yet, less than 24 hours before free agents could begin signing contracts, the Giants went from a contender to seemingly a team in disarray with the trade of star wide receiver Odell Beckham to the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday night. Not only did the Giants (5-11) lose their offensive catalyst of the last four seasons and one of the NFL most talented players, but it’s questionable if they got full value in return. The Browns sent them young safety Jabrill Peppers, the No. 17 pick overall in April’s draft and a third-round choice, Cleveland’s second in the round. It was baffling. Gettleman spent months saying he didn’t make the 26-year-old Beckham the NFL’s highest-paid receiver in late August to trade him. He also said teams should never give up on talent; Beckham’s antics often exasperated the Giants.Somehow, the GMs’ thought pattern changed in recent weeks. The deal is a clear indication the Giants are going to focus their offense on halfback Saquon Barkley, the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.Coupled with the Beckham trade, the Giants also decided not to franchise safety Landon Collins, their leading tackler in each of his four seasons. He signed an $84 million deal with the Washington Redskins and New York got nothing immediately in return — except the right to now face him twice a year. The trade of Beckham also stuck the Giants with an extra $16 million in dead cap money, pushing the team’s total to more than $33 million in 2019.Gettleman now has to decide what to do with 38-year-old Eli Manning, who will carry a $23 million cap hit in the final year of his contract. There is no quarterback in waiting to replace him.The positives for the Giants are they now have 12 draft picks, including No. 6 and 17 overall Evan Engram Color Rush Jersey , and can draft a quarterback or use the picks for edge rushers, wide receivers, defensive backs or offensive linemen. They need a lot.Gettleman was not available for comment Wednesday. The team sent out a release confirming the trade along with one that sent Olivier Vernon to the Browns for guard Kevin Zeitler.“The New York Football Giants would like to thank Odell Beckham, Jr. for his contributions,” Gettleman said in a statement. “We truly wish him well in Cleveland, and we want to wish OV the best and nothing but success for both of them.”In an interview with Kim Jones of NFL Network, Beckham said he was processing the deal.“It is what it is. It’s life,” he told Jones.Besides the two first-round picks, the Giants will have one in the second, third and sixth rounds; two in the fourth; three in the fifth; and two in the seventh.“You can win while you build a roster,” Gettleman said. “We do have a plan, and this is a part of it.”The Giants’ first-round draft choice in 2014, Beckham played in 59 regular-season games and had 390 receptions for 5,476 yards and 44 touchdowns. The catches and receiving touchdowns are both the second-highest totals in Giants history Patrick Omameh Color Rush Jersey , while the yardage total is fourth. Beckham was a Pro Bowler in each of his first three seasons and was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2014. Let’s get ready for Day 2 of the NFL shopping extravaganza"The New York Giants watched on Monday, the first day of the NFL free agency negotiating window, as prices around the league skyrocketed. Their only move of the day was to re-sign center/guard Spencer Pulley to a three-year, $9.6 million deal that turns out to look like the Giants went bargain-hunting at the dollar store. Will the Giants get on the scoreboard today? It’s going to cost if they doAs the salary cap continues to climb so, too, does what players are commanding on the free agent market. The safety market, a year after it was virtually non-existent, has exploded.Ex-Giant (at least when he can officially put pen to paper with the Washington Redskins) Landon Collins got the biggest safety contract ever at six years, $84 million with $45 million guaranteed. That set new safety marks for total value, annual value ($14 million) and guaranteed money.Tyrann Mathieu matched that annual value, getting three years, $42 million from the Kansas City Chiefs.Kareem Jackson got three years, $33 million with $23 million guaranteed. Eric Weddle looks like an absolute bargain for the Los Angeles Rams at two years, $10.5 million ($5.25 million per year). The offensive line market has also gone through the roof. If you can block Landon Collins Color Rush Jersey , or at least stand in front of someone and try, you get big money. How else do you explain Bobby Hart getting three years, $21 million from the Cincinnati Bengals? Mitch Morse got four years, $44.5 million from the Buffalo Bills, making him the league’s highest-paid center in terms of annual value. Perhaps more of interest to the Giants, right tackle Ju’Wuan James is receiving a four-year, $52 million deal from the Denver Broncos. At $13 million per year, that is the richest right tackle contract ever in terms of annual value. The market went nuts in other areas, too. Edge rusher Trey Flowers is reportedly getting a deal worth $16-17 million annually from the Detroit Lions. Linebacker Kwon Alexander is getting four years and $54 million, $13.5 million annually, from the San Francisco 49ers. Even pedestrian wide receiver Devin Funchess is getting a one-year, $13 million deal from the Indianapolis Colts. How are the Giants, with limited salary cap space and a desire to get better at right tackle and across the board on defense, going to reel in any fish in this market? The primary targets remain the sameDespite all the deals there were apparently agreed to on Monday none of the players believed to be the Giants’ primary free agent targets came off the board Dalvin Tomlinson Color Rush Jersey , with the possible exception of Anthony Barr landing with the free-spending New York Jets.We told you Monday that right tackle Daryl Williams, edge Markus Golden, safety Adrian Amos and cornerback Bryce Callahan appeared to the Giants’ top targets at those positions. As we begin Day 2 of “legal tampering,” all of those free agents remain in play.Williams, drafted by Gettleman for the Carolina Panthers, remains an object of desire despite what will be an exorbitant cost.Golden was converted from defensive end to edge in Arizona by James Bettcher, and had a 12.5-sack season in 2016 before a knee injury derailed him. Amos is reportedly closing in on a deal with someone. Could that be the Giants? If it’s not, the safety market remains flush with less expensive options.Callahan is apparently seeking a deal worth $7-8 million annually. Can the Giants play in that ballpark for a cornerback?Day 2 of the NFL shopping season is here. Will the Giants be able to strike a deal, or two? Keep it here as we find out.
